the worst
thing isnt the fire, really. it takes a few minutes, at most. it doesn’t even
look like a fire. but when you step back into your flat, everything is ruined.
the soot sits heavy on top of your dinner, the window lies shattered on the
tiles in the bathroom and under your soles, the wooden floor is soaked with
poison. the melted plastic sits, fuming and rotting, in thin strands on the
walls, spinning webs from one end of the kitchen to the other.
the worst
thing is calling the insurance. the police. the landlord. your mother. the
worst thing is coming back a month later - and nothing has been done.
everything
is still as it was, dripping soot and poison. the flies cannot eat as fast as
they die. come. call the insurance again. let them put you on hold.
